In response to the COVID-19 pandemic its disproportionate impact on BIPOC and justice-impacted communities, LGF makes substantial donation to social justice nonprofit organization.
Oakland Park, FL (December 18, 2020) –
Laughing Gull Foundation today announced its list of recipients for their 2020 COVID Response Support for Justice-Impacted Communities grant. Florida Justice Center was chosen as one of 18 grantees by LGF due to our commitment to helping justice-involved BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) people. 100% of the grant will go directly to providing case management services to returning citizens from jail and prison to connect them to social services in order to facilitate a successful transition to society.
“During this time, we felt the urgency to support organizations working on the ground to address the needs of and support the rights of directly-impacted people across the South. We are honored to support these organizations who have not only continued their work in these challenging times, but stepped up their work in powerful ways to meet critical needs, fight for basic rights, and address unjust systems,” stated Terrell Blount, LGF’s Higher Education in Prison Program Officer.
This generous giving comes at a time of rapid expansion for the Florida Justice Center. There are a number of new services currently being introduced aimed at assisting justice-involved people from arrest through reentry.
“We are proud to receive support from such a great organization as the Laughing Gull Foundation. Their advocacy for marginalized communities in the South is admirable and we look forward to a long relationship with them,” said FLJC Executive Director Jonathan Bleiweiss.
FLJC addresses disparities in BIPOC communities by providing free connections to social services including medical, mental health, and other life-saving needs. Additionally, FLJC, through the Florida Bail Fund, provides bail assistance to help get people out of jail, which is a hotbed for COVID-19 that disproportionately affects the Black community.
